Character Name: Lyra Belacqua or Lyra Silvertongue
Age: 13
Canon: His Dark Materials series
Canon Point: During The Amber Spyglass, when she and Will have to leave their daemons behind in order to cross into the Land of the Dead.
Character Information:
Everything you need to know about this little shit.
Personality:
The first thing to know about Lyra is that she doesn't hesitate to do dangerous things. She has a knack for getting into trouble and doesn't care what the dangers may be; she's willing to try anything. She'll climb any rooftop, get into a fight with any of the Gypsy boys, sneak into any room that she's not supposed to go into and frankly just doesn't give a damn what anyone has to say otherwise. If it weren't for Pan, her daemon, Lyra would probably get herself into a lot more trouble than she does, Pan acting as the hesitant, nervous side to Lyra's charge forward and fear nothing attitude. (Without Pan she'll be much more prone to just doing things impulsively and probably end up in a lot of trouble because of it. Or just pissing people off more than she usully does.)
She's very quick thinking, able to piece together puzzles and riddles fairly quickly and it's hard to fool her--for the most part because she is still a young child. Being a liar herself and a bit of a con, Lyra picks up pretty quickly on when others are trying to play her--the only instances of her getting fooled were with her parents but that was more them betraying her trust and trying to use her for their own purposes. Lyra doesn't trust very easily, rather stubborn when it comes to getting along with others but once she does trust you, you have a friend for life. (Unless you do something to make her hate you, as seen with Mrs. Coulter after Lyra's realizes her deception.)
Despite the way she acts, Lyra is very sensitive and does have a very big heart. She hates to see those she cares about get hurt--like when Roger has his daemon "cut" from him--and while she usually reacts with anger, it's easy to see the sadness weighing down on her sometimes, especially if one pays attention to Pan. It's one of those instances where, while they usually are in sync with their emotions, Pan will often display what Lyra is really feeling on the inside considering he is the physical manifestation of her soul. Lyra can also be a sweetheart when she wants to be, playing into her sensitive nature underneath the hardshell that she constantly wears, always there to help a friend wrap a wound or soothe them to sleep if they're having troubles. (Which she did numerous times for Will during their travels.) She wants to do good and wants to help, always looking out for the well being of others before herself--which is what usually leads to her getting into so much trouble most of the time. (If it weren't for the fact that she had a few adults around that she trusted, she would be in a constant state of hurt. Seriously.)
There is very little that scares Lyra and she won't hesitate to stand up to anyone that is trying to tell her she's wrong. (Though she can recognize when she does need help and will listen if the individual treats her like a person instead of an ignorant child. It's this reason that individuals such as Lee Scoresby and Iorek are able to actually talk to her like she's a child and have her listen. If they're pulling the adult routine on her, she knows it's time to listen.) Along with this comes a very harsh temper that most aren't expecting given she's just a little girl. But piss her off and you'll have one nasty child on your hands and she is definitely one to hold a grudge. (Here's looking at you, mom.) Her biggest fear is loss and being alone, though she'll never admit it, and while she does always have Pan with her, she does like being surrounded by others as well. (She tries not to let it show though, not really wanting the others to see weakness in her since most people already look down on her because she's a child.) Whenever she ends up separated from her friends Lyra tends to close herself off and become far more wary of everything and everyone, afraid that something is going to backfire on her.
Without Pan around, there's a large part of her that just feels empty now. She's a bit more prone to snapping when she gets too irritated and doesn't always pull her punches. One could say that's she's a bit emotionally unstable now, which isn't really wrong considering a part of her soul is currently missing. Without Pan's guidance, Lyra's mood jumps from one to the other very quickly and it's harder for her to make decisions as easily as she once did. She feels lost a lot more often now and longs for the missing part of her soul, always glancing around as if trying to catch sight of something that isn't there. It'll become easier for her to handle the longer she's without Pan but at first she's going to be a bit of an emotional wreck no matter how hard she attempts to hide it.
(Side note: Being so adventurous and daring could be an explanation for why Pan is still able to change forms--Lyra's personality not completely settled because she's afraid to let parts of it show and covers this fact by doing whatever she can no matter how dangerous it is. This is a rather important aspect of Lyra because most people's daemons settle when they are around 10-11.)
